What is Living Currency?
The Grey World conditions us to hoard the King's Coin. But true wealth isn't found in dollars or pixels. Living Currency is a high-velocity, non-transactional exchange of value that bypasses World 48 entirely. Discover how relational connection generates multiplicative value.
"Only when the last tree has died and the last river been poisoned and the last fish been caught will we realise we cannot eat money" — Cree Indian Prophecy
We are conditioned by the Grey World to hoard the King's Coin and told to spend it wisely. We are taught that security comes from a positive bank balance, and that value is something to be extracted and locked away for safekeeping.
But what is the King's Coin? A New Zealand $10 note is simply a specialised polymer substrate. $1 and $2 coins are aluminium-bronze alloys, and the rest are just pixels on a digital screen. They are the "middlemen" of an economy—open to manipulation—and only through an agreed exchange can they actually warm a freezing human or feed the starving.
But it is not the only currency we operate with.
There is an entirely different economy running parallel to this machinery. An egg given to make a batch of pikelets, a TradeMe post made to help sell a car for someone who isn't good with computers, or six fillets of freshly caught snapper given by a neighbour. No money is exchanged. No middleman is involved. It is a living, breathing part of the local ecology that is not measured on a spreadsheet, but felt.
Consider the gift of those six snapper fillets. It was not a direct exchange. A neighbour went out fishing that morning and gifted his catch to the friend whose land I am currently parked on. She had the option of freezing the fish to save it for later, but chose to share it fresh with me and another friend. I offered the labour of cooking a Master Chef Yellow Snapper Curry.
We ate together while watching the setting sun. The neighbour who caught the fish didn't know he had brought that specific delight to three other people. It was an uncalculated, multiplicative ripple effect.
This is not simply "doing good." It is an uncompromising recognition of our kinship with life.
I call this exchange Living Currency.
Living Currency is a high-velocity, high-contact exchange of value. It bypasses the suffocating friction of World 48 entirely. It happens the exact moment two people meet essence-to-essence and step out of the transactional ledger.
The mechanical trance of the Grey World wants you to believe you are poor if your bank account is low. But Living Currency is generated from a physical state of overflowing abundance. When you drop the urge to hoard and instead connect with your local ecology relationally rather than transactionally, you realise you are already wealthy. Contributing to a shared meal or handing over an egg alters the actual life force of a space through raw, non-transactional contribution.
You do not need to hoard the King's Coin or pay for things to generate wealth and value, you can give when 'your cup overflows'. How easy is that?
