Campfire Technology: The Compass of the Three Worlds

To do regenerative work, you must know who is driving the 'bus'. The campfire uses the body as a tuning fork to ground us in 'the Real'. We gather to burn the firewood of our own 'messy ' lives, break the mechanical trance, and return to vivid aliveness.

When we gather around a campfire, we are grounding ourselves in ‘the Real’. We consciously pause the habitual nature of our minds to give ourselves space to breathe.

To do regenerative work—whether tending a community garden or navigating the slow collapse of a town's infrastructure—you must know who is driving the ‘bus’. If you attempt to intervene in a living system while your nervous system is trapped in a mechanical trance, you will inevitably project your anxiety and fears, limiting its ability to regenerate.

True regenerative capability requires learning to read the internal tracks of three distinct worlds. (Note that you will have to discover your own somatic catches for these different worlds. I have given you examples of mine.)

World 48: The Mechanical Trance (The Realm of Extraction)

  • The Systemic Gear: This is the consensus reality trance of the Grey World—the paradigm of Value Return. It views human beings, local economies, and ecosystems as complicated, isolated ‘problems to be solved’ or ‘opportunities to be taken advantage of’. They are treated as things or categories that can be managed, scheduled, and "fixed" from the outside through "good ideas", "best practices" or clever machine logic. It operates entirely in Measured Time: clocks, bureaucratic ledgers, corporate spreadsheets, compliance to regulations, and the endless stress of winning and losing.
  • The Somatic Catch: I have registered World 48 as a distinct knot of dread in my belly or shallow, restricted breathing high in my chest. It is a state of hyper-vigilance where the internal Reformer scrambles to over-schedule, complicate and control the uncontrollable, while the Hungry Ghost demands digital sedation or high-fructose reality to numb the exhaustion of a hijacked nervous system.

World 24: The Resonance (The Realm of Vivid Aliveness)

  • The Systemic Gear: This is the space of Evolutionary Capability and the world of Essence. Here, we drop transactional exchanges and consciously build a relational field that recognises our nestedness as a living whole in a local ecology. There is no classroom, there is no teacher, only the campfire host using the physics of resonance to enable self-discovery. Working in this way shifts the relational dynamic to seeing for oneself what is real. It operates in Folded Time—moving at the organic speed of the unfolding present.
  • The Somatic Catch: I feel World 24 as a quiet hum of joy (Udana) radiating around the heart and chest. I am softly resting and breathing in my belly. The tension in my muscles, held by the Pleaser, drops away; the desperate need for external validation, making things comfortable or feeling safe evaporates. It manifests as true Maitri—the unattached capacity to witness a fellow traveller's struggle without rushing in to rescue them. I have often rushed in by providing advice or a solution I think could help. This essentially removes the friction required to develop evolutionary capability. I would rather resource another to be better able to think for themselves than me do the thinking for them.

World 12: The Real (The Charnel Ground)

  • The Systemic Gear: This is the raw, unmediated grounding in the Core of the Place. It is the absolute biological and material truth of existence before any human narrative, organisational analysis, or regenerative design intervention is overlaid onto it. World 12 is a zero-story vacuum. When, for example, my intellect begins spinning in a terrifying loop of financial uncertainty or an unknowable future, I have found it impossible to think my way out; I have had to drop an anchor heavily into direct sensory contact to shatter the trance, to stop myself from going around in circles
  • The Somatic Catch: This is the Earth Witness protocol. It is accessed exclusively through the raw mechanics of sense consciousness—feeling the bite of the winter wind on my skin, tasting the direct bitterness of a homegrown lemon, or touching the cold, undeniable wetness of mud. It is the quiet realisation that the universe is alive, reality is un-sanitized, and my body is embedded in the local ecology.

The Tuning Fork Protocol

The campfire is a platform that uses the instrument of our body, and its nervous system, as a tuning fork to spend time residing in World 24 with others. We gather to burn our own firewood which is collected from the messiness of our lives. Burning our own firewood will often illuminate for ourselves, and others witnessing, the mechanics of World 48 and its extractive nature that we may not have seen before. This can be revelatory, relieving and reorienting. Illusions can be dispelled and 'the Real' connected to.

When I tune to the dirt of World 12 because I find myself in the mechanical trance of World 48, which could be as simple as panicking about rising fuel costs, I am drawn into World 24. I reconnect to my essence and I feel life again. Here I experience nourishment, warmth and light. The cold and confusing complications of World 48 dissolve.

See some of you at a campfire,
