#4 Navigating
What if the Four Noble Truths aren't just for diagnosing suffering, but a navigational tool for discovering your unique path? In this log, I map the truths to the "Law of Three," exploring how our suffering is the exact somatic marker needed to actualise potential and develop a non-grasping mind.
At a glance
In this log, I reflect on a conversation with Shakyakumara and explore a significant reframing of the Four Noble Truths. Rather than viewing them purely as a diagnostic tool to solve the problem of existence, I propose using them as a "navigation instrument" for discovering one's unique path. I translate these truths through the "Law of Three":
- First Noble Truth is 'there is suffering': this acts as the somatic marker for the "restraining force".
- Second Noble Truth is 'there is a cause to suffering': this is the "activating force," which is can be an intention, skilful or unskilful, meeting restraints.
- Third Noble Truth is 'there is the cessation of suffering': this represents the "reconciling force," presenting an opportunity to see new potential and possibility in the moment.
- Fourth Noble Truth is 'there is a path that leads to the cessation of suffering': this is the action of actualising potential, not just realising it.
I immediately apply this framework to my present moment, noting that I chose to walk and reflect to seek "nourishment" rather than defaulting to the "sedation" of digital media. The act of recording the log serves to help me process the week's friction and integrate these insights into my "operating system," ultimately evolving my ability to develop a "non-grasping mind".
